Guide to Applying for a Property with
New Longsight Housing Co-operative

Thank you for your interest in housing with New Longsight Housing Co-op.
The Co-op operates an open access Allocations System, which provides the opportunity for anyone
aged 18 years or over to apply, have their application assessed and be placed on the waitinglist.
Please read the following information carefully. This will help you understand your
eligibility for housing, help you complete application form, provide appropriate
documentation & answer frequently asked questions.
Who can Apply for Social Housing?
Eligibility is based on the following:
- You are not subject to immigration control & have resource to public funds
- You are over 18 years of age
- You are not a home owner, part owner, have a share in any property or land
- Are not guilty of bad behaviour
- Do not have a history of rent arrears
How do I apply for a House?
You need to complete our housing application form. If you need help filling in the form
then please ask a member of staff for assistance. Please ensure that you provide us with
all the information requested on the housing application form. If you fail to complete any
sections on this form, or fail to provide evidence required, your application will not be
accepted and will be set aside as an incomplete Form. Depending on the resources of the
Co-op we may or may not let you know that your application is incomplete.

Please carefully read and answer all of the questions within this application even if you
think that they do not apply to you including:
1. Section 1: Your Details
2. Section 2: Your Housing Needs
3. Section 3: Additional Questions & General Information
4. Declaration
Tips for Applying:
1. Complete all parts of the application and answer “N/A” to questions which are not
relevant to you
2. Print in clear handwriting
3. Provide all relevant proof documentation (See below for information)
4. Sign and date the application on completion. Please note, if your application is not
signed it will not be processed.
Your housing application is split into three main parts:
Section One: relates to your Household/Personal details, housing history. This section may
determine your eligibility but has no weight on the pointing of your application; This section
will be removed before pointing takes place to ensure fair & equal treatment.
Section Two: Your Application will be pointed using information in this section
Section Three: This section may determine your eligibility but has no weight on the pointing
of your application except for the final Question in which you may have added any further
information.
Equality Monitoring Form relates to information that is required for monitoring purposes
only. This information has no weighting on the assessment of your application.
To speed up the application process, you should provide us with as much information as
possible regarding your circumstances. This is important as it allows us to assess your
application accurately.
Supporting documentation for your application
You must enclose all relevant documentation when you submit your application form. These
must be copies, do not send original documents.
The information we require from all Applicants is:
- Photographic ID for applicant and or any joint application – documents such as
passport or driving license are acceptable as well as birth certificates
- British National – Passport documentation. If you are not a British National, please
provide copy of your passport and documentation, stating your right to live & work in
UK. You can obtain your Share Code number from https:https://www.gov.uk/prove-right-to-rent/get-a-share-code-online. This will be valid for 90 days
- Income – wage slip / any benefits you receive for you and or any joint application.
Documents should be dated within the last 3 months
- Proof of address for the applicant, any joint application or anyone over the age of
18 (where applicable) – documents should be dated within the last 3 months and
have the current address. Utility bills, bank statements, Council Tax or Benefits
letters, insurance documents.
- If you are currently renting a property
o Proof of ownership / tenancy of the current address – documents we accept
include Tenancy Agreement, occupancy agreement, contract, lease
agreement, mortgage statement, Council Tax letter or buildings insurance
document.
o Your last rent statement - within the last 6 months
The following are examples of documentation you could provide based on how you answer
the questions on the Application Form:
- Pregnancy – if anyone included in the application is pregnant, we require proof of
pregnancy such as a maternity certificate which confirms the expected week of
confinement.
- Homelessness – If you have been issued with a Notice to Quit you should provide
proof of this.
- Children – if you have children who live with you on a part time basis, please provide
proof of this e.g. a letter from your child’s other parent/guardian to support any
access arrangement you may have.
- Medical evidence – letters from GP, Consultant, or any other Medical professional
- Support Agencies – letters detailing the support they are offering & how often
- Domestic Violence – evidence could include letters from Police, crime reference
numbers, evidence of Injuctions, solicitors letters
- Harrassment / Violence & abuse – community - – evidence could include letters
from Police, crime reference numbers, evidence of Injuctions, solicitors letters
- Condition of your current property – you could take pictures to lack of or shared
facility, damp/mould etc

- We may wish to visit to see your current property conditions
- We may do a Credit Reference Check
